Comprehensive Civil/Structural and Electrical Design for 138 kV Substation Expansion
Project Date: 2023
Client Type: Utility
Region: Midwest
Services Provided: Comprehensive civil/structural engineering and electrical design for an existing substation expansion.
Our 138 kV Substation Expansion Project in the Midwest tackled numerous challenges in electrical and civil/structural design, including complex site grading, stormwater management, and environmental degradation. By integrating electrical and physical design with environmental and civil engineering expertise, our team developed detailed plans for site development, demolition, grading, profiles, and erosion and stormwater management.
The project involved expanding the 138 kV yard northward to construct a ring bus and introduce a new 138 kV line. This required relocating two 138 kV breakers, acquiring, and siting an additional breaker, and reconfiguring the existing bus into a ring. Additionally, the bus disconnect switches for the relocated breakers were moved into the ring, and the existing north bus connection to the 138 kV breaker number 2 was demolished.
Despite challenges in grading and stormwater management due to pond depth and utility easements, our team collaborated with the client to devise a compliant design solution. Leveraging our expertise in site development and stormwater management, we ensured adherence to client requirements and regulatory standards.
