Navigating the Challenges of Integrating Solar, Wind, and BESS Sites

Author: Ian Hutt, PE, PMP

Industry experts are observing significant challenges in the power industry with the integration of solar, wind, and BESS sites nationwide. For utility-scale BES projects, sourcing and finding appropriate equipment can be particularly challenging, especially for voltage arrestors.

Many inverter-based resources (IBRs) power systems designers rely on traditional utility standard practices when designing substation equipment. However, this approach may be problematic for medium voltage arrestors at these sites. Many IBR-based generation systems today struggle to detect and clear faults independently, leading to prolonged fault clearance times. This can result in temporary ungrounded conditions for station collector systems under certain fault conditions and system configurations.

Why is an ungrounded condition problematic? During an ungrounded condition, and in the presence of a system fault, the system voltage can increase to nearly twice the typical level. This, combined with the extended fault duration, can lead to very high arrestor duty rating requirements. If these requirements are not met, significant site and system damage can occur.

Unique solutions are available to address this issue. The first step involves conducting an advanced power systems study to determine if the problem exists at your site. This voltage study, completed using advanced engineering software such as PSCAD, assesses potential system impacts. If the potential for issues is identified, options such as increased arrestor ratings, specialty breakers, and advanced protection schemes can be implemented. Addressing this challenge early in the design phase can prevent major station costs and schedule delays due to persistent equipment lead times in the industry.

The key to a successful project is the experience and knowledge to avoid potential pitfalls and make informed decisions. This expertise ensures the delivery of a quality design on time and with confidence. The issue discussed here is just one of many that can impact project success.
